January 23-24....2 days at sea
We have 2 days at sea before we land at our first port of call Santa Marta, Colombia. Needless to say those sea days were kind of "indoor" days. As we were sailing south toward Cuba we encountered gale force winds buffeting the port side, with swells up to 30 ft....do I sound like a sailor yet? Well, I'm working on it. We followed the north coast of Cuba and then headed south through the Caribbean Sea toward South America. The seas and wind did not let up. We were rocking and rolling, pitching and falling. I loved it, and was not in the least bit queasy. It was like being in a rocking chair, but rocking every direction. I tried to go out on the promenade deck to have a look see, but either I was going to get washed overboard or fall on my you know what. And breaking a hip at this early stage was not an option.
We are getting our sea legs on, finally winding down and getting into a routine. The last 2 days have been getting to know our 2 wonderful cabin stewards, and dining staff who are going to be taking care of us for the next few months. They work hard to please and are wonderful to get to know. They are from Indonesia and when we stop there I hope to meet their family when they bring them onboard for a visit.
We decided this time around that we would have early fixed seating for dinner, at a table for 2. I really don't like open seating, which seems to be a very popular option, but you don't know who you are going to end up with. I visit enough with different people during the day, so at dinner we like it to be just us two. I like to get to know the same dining steward and he gets to know our likes and dislikes. And if we ever decide that we don't want to go to the main dining room for dinner, we have the option of the Lido or just have room service.
We had our first Gala Ball....Black and gold theme with a nice dinner and a cocktail party. On Gala nights we get pillow gifts when we get back to our room at night. A nice moleskin journal and a shoulder bag. Very nice for keeping track of things. But most important of all a towel flying fish.
And for all of you that read my last blog.....Bruce's mustache is still a talking point......
